Building Interaction Testing Process for Cross-functional Collaboration

OBJECTIVE

Improve equipment development by addressing key pain points:

  • Undefined user requirements.

  • Limited barista input due to late feedback.

  • Slow iteration cycles with suppliers.

  • Costly late pivots from delayed business case validation.

APPROACH

Collaborated with 10+ cross-functional teams over 1–12 weeks to define user and system requirements using HCD principles.

  1. Built a medium-fidelity prototyping toolbox (water valves, Arduinos, Figma, cardboard models) to simulate barista interactions.

  2. Conducted early interaction testing to:

    • Gather qualitative barista and partner feedback.

    • Validate business requirements through qualitative and quantitative testing.

  3. Deliver user requirements to inform supplier specification and design feature decisions.

ABOUT

This project focused improving the equipment development process by integrating human-centered design (HCD) methods. The goal was to empower cross-functional teams to define user and system requirements early, ensuring equipment and systems met both barista needs and business goals.

RESULTS

Defined user requirements early, reducing costly late-stage changes.

  1. Accelerated development with suppliers by validating concepts upfront.

  2. Increased confidence in delivering systems aligned with user and business needs.

  3. Streamlined collaboration and iteration through rapid prototyping and testing.
