Pen Form Explorations
OBJECTIVE
Explore pen forms in the style of different artists.
ABOUT
In the Stanford Product Design Form Exploration class, we were asked to sketch, prototype, and create models of pens based on the style of artists of our choice.
MY ROLE
Designer
Pen Form Exploration 1
MOTIVATION
Naoto Fukasawa uses form to represent the function of objects that he designs.
What does a Naoto Fukasawa pen look like?
PROBLEM
Markers come in all different pen tips and sizes. Too often you have to remove the cap of a pen to see what kind of tip it is.
SOLUTION
THE MARKER SET - These twistable markers are shaped like the pen tip so people can immediately identify the shape and color of the marker
1 - Inspiration
I was inspired by Naoto's simple and soft products and his use of form representing function.
Simple and soft edges
Packaging indicates flavor
Outside reflects inside
2 - Sketches and Prototypes
These pen models were carved out of modulan and then painted to be look-like prototype models.
3 - Final Pen Model
The form follows the function of these pens. The shape of the pen indicates what kind of pen tips they are and the color indicates color without a user having to remove the pen cap.
Pen Form Exploration 2
MOTIVATION
Harry Bertoia welds beautifully crafted solid metal sculptures that respond to air ow, creating a musical symphony.
What does a Harry Bertoia pen look like?
SOLUTION
Swishing Brass - Listen to the pleasant soft swishing of the musical brass rods as the pen flows fluidly across the page.
1 - Inspiration
I drew inspiration from Harry's musical brass sculptures in addition to other pieces that had organic lines and a tribal feel.
2 - Sketches
I explored different lines, shapes, and form factors in my sketches.
3 - Final Pen Model
Movement while writing creates gentle ringing among the brass rods to mimic features of Bertoia's sculptures.
