Measuring Accessibility and Building Inclusive Design Guidelines

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the accessibility of Starbucks' stations, equipment, and experiences to ensure inclusivity for baristas and customers with limited vision, hearing, cognition, or physical abilities.

APPROACH

Created Inclusive Design Principles Guidelines to help engineers and suppliers design with accessibility in mind.

  1. Developed the Accessibility Scorecard to evaluate equipment, packaging, and experiences, providing scores and recommendations for improvement.

  2. Collaborated with the Starbucks Signing Store in DC to improve in-store accessibility tools.

  3. Influenced a cross-functional team to adopt New Accessibility Guidelines for U.S. stores.

  4. Trained a third party to perform ongoing accessibility assessments.

ABOUT

The Inclusive Design Guidelines provide a framework for designing accessible equipment and systems. The Accessibility Scorecard is a tool for evaluating accessibility across all aspects of Starbucks' products and services, from equipment to customer experiences.

RESULTS

  1. Empowered teams to design more inclusive products and experiences.

  2. Established ongoing accessibility assessments to ensure long-term inclusivity.
